What Is Open Ended Play? Why It Matters for Development

What is Open Ended Play?

Open ended play is play without a set outcome, without instructions, and no “right” way to do it! Children explore, create, and they decide where the play goes and what happens next.

There are so many benefits of open ended play! Open ended play encourages creativity, independence, and imagination. These are key skills for lifelong learning.

The same things can become a hundred different things, depending on the day, the mood, and the imagination behind them. It is simply play that kids lead themselves.

This type of child led play gives kids freedom to make their own choices and follow their curiosities.

In the classroom, I have always aimed to have boxes of 'bits and pieces' available for all to play with and I avoid toys that only have one way of being used. We want to allow children to play as they want to play! Kids always surprise me with what they find fun in and manage to create!

Why open ended play matters for child development

Open ended play isn’t just fun, which it is, it also builds real life skills. When children are given the freedom to lead their own play, they naturally:

    • Build decision making skills
    • Solve problems on their own
    • Think creatively and flexibly
    • Develop emotional regulation
    • Focus for longer stretches improving their attention span.

And because there's no fixed way to play, the same toy or tool can grow with a child over months or years. What starts as simple stacking might evolve into imaginative storytelling or complex design.

What open ended play looks like in everyday life

A tower of blocks that becomes a rocket ship.
A handful of sticks and leaves that create patterns and stories.
Play dough that turns into animals, then food, then something unrecognisable but important.

Open ended play often starts with simple materials: blocks, loose parts, fabric scraps, cardboard, or anything that doesn’t tell the child what to do. No predetermined outcome. There’s freedom in not knowing what it should become and that’s where creativity blooms.
